Coaching

What is Coaching?

The International Coaching Federal (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching focuses on visioning, success, the present and moving toward the future.

What is a Health Coach?

According to the ICF, a health coach is a professional who uses evidence-based strategies and conversations to help clients, or patients, change their behaviors to improve their health. Health coaches help clients achieve lasting, self-directed changes that align with their values and promote well-being.
Health coaching involves three steps:

  • Building self-awareness

  • Taking action steps

  • Monitoring and evaluating results

Health coaches can specialize in different areas, such as mental health, nutrition, or emotional eating. For example, a mental health coach may help clients identify negative self-talk and self-pity, and use positive affirmations to help them focus on progress and positivity. A health coach who specializes in nutrition may help clients lose weight and achieve a healthy lifestyle.

What Can't a Health Do?

Health coaches can't:
Diagnose health conditions
Prescribe medical treatments
Provide psychological interventions
Prescribe supplements
Prescribe meal plans
Prescribe or program exercise plans
Order or interpret labs
